  • Shelby County Bowl For Kids' Sake

  • What does bowling have to do with mentoring? To Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby County—a whole lot! Bowl For Kids’ Sake is a fundraiser that helps Big Brothers Big Sisters fund its ongoing mission of matching children facing adversity with adult mentors. The Shelby County office opened its doors in 2013. In 2014 the organization moved into an office within Alabaster Parks & Recreation building, and served 100 matches. This year BBBS of Shelby County plans to serve 200 matches of Little Brothers and Sisters with Big Brothers and Sisters. Children who are mentored are 52% less likely to skip school, 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs, and 33% less likely to hit someone.

Shelby County companies are invited to create a team and Bowl for Kids’ Sake! This year’s bowling event will take place on Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22 at Oak Mountain Lanes. Each bowler on the team raises money through a personalized online fundraising page. Most people raise an average of $150, but some have raised well over $2,000.  “This event is such a fun way to raise money and awareness about what we do. It’s a great way for companies to do some team building, while also giving back to the community,” said Sue Johnson, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Companies that are interested in participating can learn more by visiting or by calling Kim Egan, Shelby County Program Director at  or 205-378-4050.
